How to reseed your lawn: First, start with the right season
Certain times of year are better than others for planting grass seed. The type of grass seed plays a part in this as well, so please keep that in mind. If you are going to reseed your lawn yourself, then you will need to select a type of grass that meets your landscape accordingly. This means you must ensure that the grass fits with the soil well, looks good in your landscape, and is planted during the right season.
Grass seed can be planted any time of the year, of course, but planting during certain seasons often leads to excessive weed growth. For warm-season grass, it is best to plant during the spring into the early summer. This grass will grow well with the springtime rains, developing a strong root system for the summertime. Cool-season grass does best when it is planted in the late summer or early fall. Planting it late enough in the summer season will help the grass survive the heat of the sun while still being able to grow for a couple of months before getting too cold and going dormant. This growth will lend itself to protecting the overall health of the grass as it comes back the following fall.
How to prepare your lawn for seeding
It is important to understand your soil before ever laying down grass seed. You will need to check your soil’s pH to ensure it will balance well with the grass seed you want to plant. Soil should be aerated and any areas of thatch buildup needs to be removed. It is also a good idea to treat your soil for weeds before applying the seed.
You should also “scalp” your lawn before seeding, so that the seeds can grow more easily in the soil.
